Donald Richie's book Rashomon gives the total number of shots minus credit shots as 407. Assuming this is the same print (and assuming DR worked with the actual film, not its shooting script), Ivan's result is very good and reliable, for there is only 10 shots difference from Richie's, and of course mesuring with Cinemetrics in real time one is bound to miss a cut or two (there are pretty unnoticeable cuts in the fast-moving tracking shots in the forest) so we have a between 3 and 2 % margin of error, vhich is quite good!

More than a year later I remeasured this film using the keyboard option -- got a shorted ASL results and messed less cuts. I am more confident in my measurements -- this was Teo's first attempt at the tool in any case. I think he skipped the credits sequence too -- which is fairly fast.
So -- see my Rashomon (chronotope mesurement) for a corrected picture.
