As always, early cinema confounds established understandings of filmmaking styles from later films. Melies' classic sets the bar high in terms of ASL. Yet one can still notice a kind of progressive, accelerating logic in the editing as the party of Earthlings is chased by the Selenites and plummet back to Earth.
