Viktorija Eksta's comment:
It is the second film made by Lev's Kuleshov's masterclass collective. As Kuleshov writes in his memoirs, the direction of picture was a collective work, six people of the crew were directors and everyone did multiple jobs.
This movie was planed in details and it might be the one, that is a best illustration of Kuleshov's theoretical principles.
The story takes place in the Wester capitalist country and USSR. Engeneer Podobed has to deliver his invention- the death ray machine to help the enslaved western workers of a helium factory to conduct a revolutionary rising.
The film has rapid cutting, energetic camera style, expresionistic visual look. There are many fight, chase and stunt scenes. Public received this film not so enthusiasticaly and critics blamed Kuleshov for formalism.
The very beggining and ending reels of the film are missing.
