Charles O'Brien's comment:
This film stars the Amos and Andy blackface comedy duo, who had one of the top radio shows on NBC. 0.00: traffic jam, as means of introducing Amos and Andy, whose taxi has broken down in front of Penn station in NY; 2.55 Jean Blair and her shady suitor Ralph ride on horses through the forest; eligible bachelor Richard Williams meets them, and introduces himself; city street in an African-American tenement district, where Amos and Andy chat in the their office; Kingfish arrives to announce to A&A that he has found them a job delivering Duke Ellington's jazz orchestra to a party in upstate New York (Ellington is not mentioned by name); 19.25: Jean Blair and her father wait at their mansion for the orchestra to arrive; 25.40: the orchestra plays, and a dozen or so couples dance, as the music continues offscreen during A&A's tire-change gag; music stops at 28.10, and then begins again at 28.50, when another tune is introduced; the tune continues offscreen to accompany A&A's meeting with Richard Williams ("Mr. Richard"), their beloved former employer; at 34.30, the band, with a chorus of voices, performs the film's theme song, "Three Little Words" ("Three little words, eight little letters, means 'I love you'"), which segues into a different, up-tempo tune that showcases the band via a series of short solos; the music continues as underscoring during the romantic scene outdoors on the lake between Richard and Jean; 39.50: "The Mystic Knights of the Sea" (title) [one reason I record these titles on cinemetrics is to keep track of how redundant they often are in films of the time. In this case, the scene's first line of dialogue is "Brothers of the Mystic Knights of the Sea, I hereby call this meeting to order." Moreover, the speaker appears in front of a poster reading "Mystic Knights of the Sea." So why is the intertitle needed?]; A&A are ordered by Kingfish to spend the night in a haunted house; 48.00: the meeting ends with the lodge brothers singing "Nobody Knows But the Lord" (forty seconds); Ralph and his henchman arrive at the haunted house; A&A also arrive at the house; the next scenes entail cross-cuts between the two lines of action; 60.55 "Next Afternoon" (title); Richard talks with Jean's father; 62.00: Jean at the piano plays the melody to "Three Little Words" (thirty seconds); crazy cab ride sequence; 70.40: A&A arrive at Penn station, where Mr. Richard is about to board the train; 72.10: "Several Days Later" (title); A&A open wedding cake present from Mr. and Mrs. Richard Williams.
